Districts

The current “Districts” of Scottish Swimming started life in 1888 as “Local Centres”.

The 1896 SASA Handbook lists the Local Centres as:

Northern Local Centre – Orkney & Shetland Islands, Caithness, Sutherland, Ross (excluding the Hebrides), Cromarty, Inverness, Nairn, Elgin, Banff, Aberdeen, Kincardine.

Dundee & District Local Centre – Forfar, Fife (north of a straight line drawn from Crail to Stirling).

Perth & District Local Centre – Perth, Kinross, Clackmannan.

Eastern Local Centre – Edinburgh, Linlithgow, Haddington, Berwick, Roxburgh, Selkirk, Peebles, Fife (south of a straight line drawn from Crail to Stirling).

Western Local Centre – The Hebrides, Argyle, Bute, Dumbarton, Stirling, Renfrew, Lanark, Ayr, Wigtown, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries.

“Local Centres” – responsible for all registrations and affiliations and the general government of the sport and “Each Local Centre shall subscribe annually to the funds of the Association the sum of Five Shillings for each Club affiliated to their Local centre at the end of the previous year, which is payable on or before the 30th day of April. Each Centre shall also contribute one third of all permit fees received during the season.

By 1930, the SASA Handbook lists the “District Associations” as:

Northern Counties A.S.A
Orkney & Shetland Islands, Caithness, Sutherland, Ross (excluding The Hebrides), Nairn Elgin, Banff, Aberdeen, Kincardine.

Midland Counties A.S.A.
Forfar, Fife (north of the River Leven)

Perth & District A.S.A.
Perth, Kinross, Inverness

Eastern Counties A.S.A.
Edinburgh, Linlithgow, Haddington, Berwick, Roxburgh, Selkirk, Peebles, Fife (south of the River Leven).

Western Counties A.S.A. The Hebrides, Argyle, Bute, Dumbarton, Stirling, Renfrew, Lanark, Ayr, Wigtown, Kirkcudbright, Dumfries, Clackmannan.

By 1968, the SASA Handbook only lists the local organisations as “Districts”, with minor changes to definitions. Perth & District A.S.A was discontinued and Inverness was returned to the Northern District !!
